The Giving of Flowers

when I pick them

“You are so beautiful”
when they go into their vases

“Thank you”
when age has withered them and they have to come out of their vases
and be laid on the compost heap with the eggshells and teabags and kitchen peelings

to change, to break down, to wait
warm in the heap in rain and sun

till the time’s right
sieved into the wheelbarrow
they’re sprinkled into the hole dug for the sapling

“Give again”
“Live again”
