Taiaroa Head

Oh enormous baby of the Royal Albatross
White-feathered
Wind-ruffled
Fluffy, flightless and fat

Solid and stolid and sitting on the nest
Waiting for Mum or Dad to come with food

Could be hours
Could be days

When I next feel impatient
I’ll think of you
And count to a million and two

Background

Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand is the only inhabited mainland
in the world to have an albatross colony.
